How DSL
Modems works
If you are
reading this article on your
computer at home or office,
it probably arrived via
modem. A DSL
Modem is used to send
digital data over a
telephone line. In 1960
DSL Modems came in
existence to allow terminals
to connect to computers over
the telephone lines.
A DSL
Modem works by the
dedicated copper wiring
running between the phone
company nearest central
office to any normal home,
office or apartment. This
dedicated wire can carry
more than the 3,000 hertz
signal needed for your
telephone. When a DSL modem
is equipped in your house or
business, then a section of
your telephone wire can be
used to transmit high speed
internet connection. The
capacity is around 1Mbps
between the home and the
telephone company and 8 Mbps
between the phone company
and the home under ideal
conditions.

A DSL
Modem in most homes and
business are connected to an
asymmetric DSL (ADSL) line.
The ADSL Modem divides up
the available frequencies in
a line that most Internet
users look at, or download,
more information then they
send, or upload.
A DSL
Modem is a
distance-sensitive
technology, the limit for a
DSL Modem is around
18,000 feet. Most
DSL
providers place a
lower limit on the distances
for their service. The
further way you are, you may
see speeds below the
promised maximums, while
customers nearer the central
office will have faster
connections and may see
extremely high speeds in the
future.
The DSL
Modem or ADSL technology
provide maximum downstream
speeds of up to 8 Mbps at a
distance of about 6,000 feet
and upstream speeds of up to
640 Kbps. Some vast
improvements are already
available in some areas
through services called
ASDL2 and ASDL2+. the ASDL2
increases downstream to 12
Mbps and upstream to 1 Mbps.
the ASDL2 improves
downstream to as much as 24
Mbps and upstream to 3 Mbps.
